F.A.Q

What’s this Purim thing anyway?

Purim is a Jewish holiday where we celebrate the events in the Book of Esther, and generally get excited about springtime and shit. It’s a secular holiday, so we don’t go to synagogue or chant Torah, and instead we play games, do a spiel (a dramatic retelling of the main story), eat and drink (because it’s a Jewish holiday), and generally just dance and get silly. If you were thinking that we were freaks for starting a party at 7pm, you were right—we are freaks, and the party starts at 7 because there are things to do!!!

What should I wear?

A costume!! Definitely wear a costume. Dressing up is a big part of Purim. See, in the Purim story, Esther (main character of the book; nice lady) has to hide her Jewish identity in order to become Queen. So, we invite you to have your costume reflect a part of your identity that you wish to more fully express, showing aspects of yourself you've kept hidden in order to “fit in.” We want to celebrate all of you! Purim is about reclaiming parts and expressions of ourselves that we have exiled or not been in touch with. It’s a time to try on, explore, or deepen our relationship to who we are or who we might want to be.

That sounds really heavy for a party!

We’re Jews! Everything is heavy! Next question.

Will there be food?

Duh. And lots of wine! Or non-alcoholic beverages, if you prefer!

When should I get there?

Be there right at 7! We’ll be eating together and then doing the spiel shortly thereafter, followed by an afterparty / dance party. We really encourage you to come for the whole evening and not drop in late, it’s all part of the experience!

Where is the money going?

A big part of Purim is charitable giving. Traditionally, we have donated our profits for this event to Jewish Community Action, an organization doing great work for our Twin Cities community. We’re excited to do that again this year!

In light of the situation in Gaza, we will also be raising money and selling merchandise from Spill Paint Not Oil! to benefit the family of Olivia and Mohammed and their efforts to support their relatives.

What is your COVID-19 policy?

We ask that all attendees take an at-home test and stay home if they are feeling ill or have any cold- or flu-like symptoms. We offer full refunds of your ticket if you end up not coming due to illness!

This event involves drinking, eating, and dancing in a small space. We support and encourage anyone who would prefer to mask for the duration of the event, however we do not require that attendees wear masks.
